Kentucky officer discovers cocaine in truck on I-64

A vehicle-enforcement officer inspecting a tractor-trailer at a weigh station found 26.4 pounds of cocaine stashed in a secret compartment, Kentucky state officials said yesterday.

The cocaine was valued at $400,000. Maj. David Herald, who commands the Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement special operations unit, said, "Any type of seizure involving drugs out of these commercial vehicles is just a tremendous plus for safety."

The driver, Krystian Ziolkowski, 25, of Pawtucket, R.I., was charged with trafficking cocaine, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded innocent at an arraignment yesterday and was being held in the Shelby County, Kentucky jail at Shelbyville, Kentucky near the weigh station on Interstate 64.

Herald said cocaine found Tuesday night was hidden in a compartment above the sleeper section of the tractor cab. It was the third alleged drug haul that Kentucky officers have turned up at interstate weigh stations in two weeks.

Herald said drug smugglers appear to be relying more on over-the-road transportation because of increased security at airports since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Kentucky Officer Justin Dececca, who arrested Ziolkowski, said he became suspicious while talking to the driver, so he searched the rig. Dececca is among several dozen vehicle-enforcement officers who recently have been trained in how to stop drug smuggling, Herald said. Dececca credited the training with helping him uncover the cocaine.

Through mid-November, vehicle-enforcement Kentucky officers had made 388 drug arrests this year, according to figures supplied by the agency. They had seized 1,162 pounds of marijuana valued at more than $2.5million and 52 pounds of cocaine worth nearly $1.2million, according to the agency. Those figures are down from a year ago, Herald said.

Two other recent drug busts occurred at weigh stations along I-65 at Elizabethtown and Simpson County, Kentucky in Southern Kentucky. In all, the agency seized 50 pounds of marijuana worth about $100,000, Herald said. Both drivers and a passenger were charged with marijuana trafficking.

Kentucky authorities have found no connection between any of the drug busts involving tractor-trailers, he said.

The agency's biggest cocaine seizure occurred at the Simpson County, Kentucky weigh station in early 2002, when officers found 64 pounds of the drug, valued at about $850,000, under the sleeper cab of a tractor-trailer.
